Zonchoroai, the Living Dancer

Writer's picture: Sephyra ClercSephyra Clerc

"Renewal, life, and joy, joy! Joy is the important gift of the artist to the world. You are a dancer, and joy is especially important to you: for others it may be a part of their art, but for you it's the very life, the very impulse of your art. Movement without joy is dead; there is nothing else as important, nothing as fundamental, as determining, as absolutely alive. Take joy in your strong points, and take joy in your difficulties as well and weaknesses, and you transform them into stepstools to excellence.

"Dance is the physical, bodily manifestment of joy in living, joy of Life. The dancer evolves in space and proclaims the human being's absolute joy in the perfection of the present moment, his infinite power of expression as an artist. You suffer as you strive to attain the goal you set yourself in Dance, in Art, and I tell you this: if you have joy in dancing your dance cannot be other than beautiful and captivating. Your audience watches you move, and absorbs the joy of life that you express as a refreshing dew of strength. I also tell you that joy is energy of enjoyment of the present moment; and the enjoyment of the present moment is the key to the secret of life. With it can be unlocked all the doors that stand between you and your Ideal of highest achievement. In it are all the forces which direct a perfect work of art. Through it alone can true living Art be made.

"So free yourself from the fears and the doubts that hinder your body's free movement, and the suffering, unless in your suffering you also embrace joy. Joy is possible in suffering, if you have faith that your suffering creates beauty, and if you consecrate yourself as a living sacrifice on the altar of Art, you can only dedicate each movement to your own vision of beauty, which only you can achieve. Thus do you become at once more of a dancer, and more of a human being: more of a dancer through the suffering, and more of a human being through the joy."
