"Dance is the loftiest, most moving, most beautiful of the arts, because it is not a mere translation or abstraction of life; it is life itself!"
                                                                                                                     - Martha Graham
Hello everyone! Welcome into my world. I'm a freelance ballet dancer, teacher and choreographer. I'm fascinated by the power of movement to express the most poignant and beautiful emotions, thoughts and feelings in the human soul. I think Movement is the main attribute of Life, and harmonious movement is the closest glimpse we have of Man's spiritual essence, his kinship with the divine, and the spirit dictating action behind the physical body. Like the great Martha Graham, I believe the only purpose of technical training in dance is to render the body more amenable to the dictates of the spirit so that the former can become the direct expression of the latter.

My services

I'm passionate about transmitting my knowledge and ideas to equally passionate artists. If you're a student in dance, an aspiring dancer or if you're returning to the practice of the art after a long pause, just because you find that you can't live without dance... please click here to see the studios where I teach, the style of classes and also the private lessons I offer.

My project

My long-term project is to choreograph dance to the great music dramas in the opera repertoire, such as the Ring Cycle, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Parsifal, and The Flying Dutchman. My second love beside dance, is music, and especially when it's associated with drama and stage acting. I believe that the power of each of the arts can find complete expression only when these arts are assembled, and that the music dramas of Richard Wagner, for instance, who strove to unite all of the arts, can achieve as much expressivity if not more, than the traditional ballets if dance was added to them. I'm currently seeking to bring together dancers of all ages and levels, students as well as professionals, to help me in this project. The only thing you need is to be passionate about dance! If you are a professional dancer or have some experience in dance and would be interested in participating in the project, please click here to go directly to my Projects page. I'd love to hear from you!

My blog

Some time ago I've created Zonchoroai, the Living Dancer blog, to regularly & poetically express my thoughts on dance, movements and the performing arts in general. Zonchoroai is my artistic alter ego as it were, the voice of intuition which guides me in my dance training & teaching. Why Zonchoroai? The name is loosely based on Ancient Greek to mean approximately what the English part of the title means: "zon" meaning something like "alive" and "choros" being, contrarily to what we might first think, "dance" rather than "song"... which shows us once more how much the two are connected!
Now that you know what prompted the name it's time to explain more clearly what the blog is about. The choice of a Greek name must seem evident to you considering the fact that I stand in line with artists of the past centuries who believed in Ancient Greece as the epitome of the perfect civilization at least on a philosophical, artistic level. As Wagner writes in The Artwork of the Future, the Ancient Greeks portray for us in their sportive & artistic practices the Ideal of physical strength, beauty & athleticism which we try in vain to reproduce in our present times. Today specialization is key and we have dropped that perfect balance in the practice of sports & physical disciplines, just as we have separated the various performing arts - in Ancient Greece plays incorporated dance & song as well as speech & acting.
It is this unity & this harmony that Zonchoroai is meant to evoke, reminding the reader of the eternal truths of art which lie quite beyond technique, even though technique might be the only true way whereby we may attain to those truths. A friend once told me that the tone of my blog reminded him of Rudyard Kipling's writing style; it was much to my delight, seeing as this blog is an attempt to present counsels, encouragement, and food for thought in a poetic, solemn & agreeable manner that may provide comfort through my readers' own artistic journey. And I would hope, just like Rudyard Kipling, to also provide you with a stronger moral & philosophical base to continue your efforts, not only in seeing your technical progress but also your progress in appreciating to work towards your goals. By connecting oneself to the eternal truths of art and considering each faculty as part of a united whole we speed up our training and increase our joy of learning to the tenfold.
